Choosing the Right Keywords

By Jack Spencer

Any of us that have a website on the Internet are going to be interested in getting plenty of traffic to it. This is the case whenever it comes to multi-million-dollar websites that are getting thousands of people on them per day to smaller websites that simply want to have a voice somewhere on the Internet. To these people, regardless of who they are, this traffic is going to be something that is very important.

Another important thing that needs to be considered when you're trying to get this traffic are the key words that need to be used in order to have it pulled into your website. If you choose the right keywords, you will be able to receive a ton of traffic as a result and the opposite is also true. Make sure that you aren't simply choosing keywords at random because you will be unhappy with the traffic to receive.

The first step in doing this is to compile a list of keywords that are going to be used on your website. Turn your browser over to the Google external keyword tool, which is a free tool that is available through the Google search engine and is used by many webmasters for this very purpose. Plug in a few keywords that can be used to seeds and allow it to give you a list which includes synonyms. Save all of these into a text file.

From that list, you will probably be able to come up with a number of different synonyms that you had not considered before. Add these to the tool that is provided by Google and rerun your searches. Knowing this, you will have a more expanded keyword list that you will be able to use on your website. You may be able to find words that you had never even considered before.

Now that you have all of these keywords separated into list, you need to figure out approximately how much traffic they are going to be able to send to you. Make sure that you sort this list by that amount of traffic so that you can see the ones that are going to net you the most. After that, you need to begin searching for each of these keywords to find the competition, either using the tool or are doing so by hand.

After you have identified the best keywords, you should do a little bit of competition searching on Google in order to find out which ones are going to do the best for you when you use them on your website. What I do, is to search for each of the phrases using quotes in Google in order to find out the websites which are optimized for that particular term. This can help me to cut the list down to a sizable amount of phrases.

The best keyword phrases that you are left with are the ones that are going to eventually be used in your website. Another thing that needs to be done is that you need to start compiling links back into your website that are using the same key words as the anchor text. When you do this, you will be able to not only rank for these keywords but for a number of other longtail keyword phrases that you have not even thought of before.
