Legitimate Work From Home Jobs

By Brooke Lorren

I'm sure you've seen the signs on the side of the road or ads in the newspaper... "Make money from home! Quit your day job and work in your pajamas!" Of course, you have to send money to someone to find out what this great opportunity is. Then when they return with the information, you'll probably be told to send away for a list of addresses, and sent them letters telling them how they can make money from home. People really don't get paid for stuffing envelopes at home, do they? While I have never seen a legitimate work at home job stuffing envelopes, there are ways that you can work from your home. I have compiled a list of what some of them are and how to get started.

Write From Home

If you can construct sentences and write articles that people will be interested in reading, you can work from home as a writer. Some companies that you can sign up for include Associated Content, Epinions, Helium, and eHow. I have only worked for Associated Content and Epinions, but I know that they do pay. Many of these sites will pay you royalties on all the content you produce, as long as you keep your account current. You really do earn money in your sleep, after you have built up a good variety of articles. Writing jobs usually don't pay a great deal in the beginning, but the more you write, the better your income will be.

Ebay

I have an aunt that does her work from home, and makes thousands of dollars a month selling things on Ebay. You need to find an inexpensive source of treasures to sell, and you need to have a good eye for what will sell well. My aunt goes to a used-merchandise warehouse and finds designer bags and other items that people will pay well for. Other people specialize in books, garage sale finds, or another category that they know well.

Home Party Sales

If you have ever been to a Tupperware or Pampered Chef party, you've probably seen a home sales consultant. There are many companies that allow you to start your own home business and work by selling their products, which range from candles to scrapbook supplies to naughty lingerie. You usually need to pay for a start up kit to begin, which might cost a couple hundred dollars, and people that have excellent sales skills do better than people without them (which is why I don't sell things). In most cases, you will have to travel to other people's homes to demonstrate the product, but you set your own schedules, and many moms do this work in the evenings after their husbands come home.

Being Human

Well, you're not going to make money just for being a human being (unless the government sends some money your way), but you can get work because you're a human being (with a computer and internet connection). I recently discovered mturk.com. It's run by Amazon.com, so you're dealing with a reputable company. Mturk is a place where companies can go to get people to do small tasks that computers cannot do, and they need a human's intelligence for. While testing the place out, I completed tasks like finding contact information, marking whether a word was a person, location, title, or war, and entering addresses. They don't usually pay very much (some translation tasks pay better), but many of these tasks only take a few seconds to do. You can have the cash that you earned transferred to your bank account, or exchange it for an Amazon.com gift card.

Take Surveys

Survey takers often don't make a lot of money, but you can make a little spare change as a survey taker. The best company that I have worked for is Pinecone Research. They send me about one survey a month, and I get $3 for it. Other companies will enter you into sweepstakes drawings (I usually skip these, I'd rather enter a sweepstakes), pay you in points that you can exchange for gift cards and other nice things (I've gotten nice gift cards and magazines from erewards.com).

As you can see, there really are opportunities to work from home that are legitimate. These aren't the only work at home jobs around either. Look around, and you should find something that works for you. If not, you can try to get creative, find out what people need, and offer them that service from home. Even Apple Computer started out in someone's garage!
