By Scott Rodgers

Roof is the most essential part of the home. It protect us and the interiors from heat, rain, wind, snow etc. and since it faces all the hash weather conditions, it is prone to leaks and other defects. So, at some point or the other you will have to get your roof replaced.

If you are into a situation where you have to get your roof replaced, there a number of things to consider before that like the most important -what new roofing material should be selected, what all preparations need to be made before the roof replacement project starts. Also, it is very important to hire the right contractor for the job. So, below are some tips that might help you.

The very first thing you should do is to properly inspect your roof and determine the kind of treatment it requires. Whether it needs complete replacement or some repair work can do the job.

A variety of roofing materials are available these days. For example you can go for the most popular one asphalt shingles. Other materials like tiles, wood, metal are also available. But, be sure that the roof you choose matches your home structure.

Experts always advise to tear off the old layer of the roof and only then install the new one for better durability. But, in some cases you can add the new roof over the old layer. In such cases make sure that your roof is strong enough to take the extra weight.

Roof installation can be a complicated task and different roofing materials have different requirements which must be taken care of to complete the installation successfully. For example, if you are using asphalt glass roof or tiles, you need to have a solid base made up material like plywood. If you have wooden roof, then you need to have an open sheathing for proper roof ventilation.

During the installation of the new roof, when your roofing contractor starts removing the old roof, make sure to cover doors and windows so that they are not destroyed. Remove the debris falling over your home. One very important thing to remember is to arrange for proper drainage system on the roof while it is being replaced.

Also, while looking for the contractor, have the bids from at least three contractors. You can also get some references from your friends and neighbors. So, it is always recommended to do some good amount of research before hiring any one as roof is the largest investment for any home homeowner and must be taken care of.
